FITZGERALD, William 8.

Fitzgerald, a 2l\-year-old white native of Detroit, Mich., was a pro-
fessional burglar. On the night of May 14, 1891, he burglarized the
house of Dr. MacCurdy in Youngstown, Ohio, and was arrested shortly
afterwards by Policeman James Freed while he was waiting for a train
at the Hrie Railroad Station, Fitzgerald managed to break away and

arrested by the officers who had converged on the place and charged
with Freed's murder, Convicted and sentenced to death, he was hanged
at the Ohio State Prison on December 18, 1891. His wife, who he had

at the Erie Railroad Station, Fitzgerald managed to break away and
was ruhning down the railroad track when Freed fired at him. Fitz-
gerald turned and fired back with his bullet striking Ereed in the
abdomen and inflicting a fatal wound. He sbught to hide under the
Station platform, but his hiding place was discovered and he was
arrested by the officers who had converged on the place and charged
with Freed's murder, Convicted and sentenced to death, he was hanged
at the Ohio State Prison on December 18, 1891. His wife, who he had
