FITZGERALD, William 8.
Fitzgerald, a 2l\-year-old white native of Detroit, Mich., was a pro-
fessional burglar. On the night of May 14, 1891, he burglarized the
house of Dr. MacCurdy in Youngstown, Ohio, and was arrested shortly
afterwards by Policeman James Freed while he was waiting for a train
at the Hrie Railroad Station, Fitzgerald managed to break away and
arrested by the officers who had converged on the place and charged
with Freed's murder, Convicted and sentenced to death, he was hanged
at the Ohio State Prison on December 18, 1891. His wife, who he had
only married in March attempted to Slip him some poison while he was
on death row but was unsuccessful, A large crowd of persons from all
walks of life crowded into the death chamber to witness the execution

Station platform, but his hiding place was discovered and he was
arrested by the officers who had converged on the place and charged
with Freed's murder, Convicted and sentenced to death, he was hanged
at the Ohio State Prison on December 18, 1891. His wife, who he had
