Cain, a white man, arrived at the gold fields around Canyon City,
Oree, during the summer of 1864, That fall and winter, he worked
for Andrew Watson, a placer miner, Andrew—Watesen, acreeing to wait
until the Spring to receive payment which was to be in gold. In
April, 1865, Watson, who had BHHMXE bad luck all winter, paid him
$100 in greenbaéks. Cain considered this an injustice and went in
to Canyon City to drown his sorrows in drink. When he became intoxi-
cated, K&XWENEXXSXEMSXMINSXAMAX armed himself with a ball-and-cap
pistol and returned to the mine. He threw the greenbacks in Watson's
face to distract him and shot him in the chest, MWHEESKXXSXX Watson's
body fell into a flume where it floated for about 150 feet before
being retrieved by other miners, As quickly as he had fired the shot
Cain surrendered his weapon to the other miners and was placed under
arrest. Joaquin Miller, the poet, who was then practicing law in
Canyon City,am served as the defense counsel and pleaded insanity,
showing that Cain was subjected to frequent seizures, but he was con-
victed and sentenced to hang. On Aug. 3, 1865, he was hanged at Can-
yon City. While riding to the gallows seated on his coffin, he amu-
