Kale was conviéted in Newton, N. C., of the murder of
George Davis. "Kale was tried before Judge Coble at the |
fall, 1898, term. The defendant escaped and feld to
Cuba. His presence was made known to local authorities
by a veteran of the pea epee war, who mentioned
having seen the prisoner in Havana, The convict had,
under an assumed name, jointbd the armed forces and was
serving as an enlisted man in the army. On being re-
turned he was tried, convicted, and, on the appeal being
sustained, was likewise executed by hanging in the Newton
jail yard. The execution was performed by J. W. Black.
