DUCHARME, Francis

Ducharme, a 27-year-old white man of low mentality and considered "a
degenerate", was born in Salem, Mass. Most of his life until he be-
came of age was spent as a ward of the Massachusetts State Board of
Charity. A rower, he werked as a laborer on various farms and fac-
tories, finally settling in Zasthampton, Mass, Harly in 1916, he was
arrested in #asthampton on charges of smashing Federal mail boxes,

On the afternoon of Oct, 31, he was in Chicopee where he lured 3-year~
old Leona Kaczar to a deserted house a 16 Depot St. and assaulted her,
He left her unconscious body mmiux in a space under the house and she
died of her injuries the next daye Some other residents of #asthamp-=
ton who had seen Ducharme in Chicopee on the 31st notified the police
and he was arrested on the evening of November 2 on suspicion, He
freely confessed and turned over the bloodstained garments that he
had worn to Chicopee, At his trial he wkmaset pleaded guilty and his
plea was accepted by the Judge who sentenced him to die, The Board
of Pardons refused to intervene, the Governor deblined to grant a
respite, and he was electrocuted at the Massachusetts State Prison on
Sept. 11, 1917. He was reciting the prayer for the dying when the
Switch was thrown,
