common-law wife, He had left his wife and family in Phila-
delphia several years previously and came to Chicago with
Irs, Attila who also deserted her husband, He shot her in
a fit of jealousy, On day before execution, asked wife in
Philadelphia to claim his body, Fearful that the news migh
affect his mind, jail officials did not tell him until the
last minute that the state pardon board had refused clemen-
cy appeals,
