who visited him. When the Sheriff began reading him the death warrant
on the day of his execution, Bridget Durgen, also under sentence of
death, began wailing and he asked to be allowed to bid her goodbyes

his last words were: "I don't mind this at all = in a little while,

in Charleston, 5S. C. Above average intelligence, he was given every
opportunity by a kindly master who made him a house servant. WHEHX

his new owner used him harshly, After four years of servitude there,
he and four other malcontented slaves escaped and made their way to
Canada, Williams did not like the cold weather and returned to New
Orleans where he managed to pass as a freedman and obtaindd work on

a sugar plantation, When.New Orleans was occupied by Federal troops
during the Civil War, he was employed by a Union officer as a servant
and after the war's end, he accompanied the officer to New York, He
then moved to Monnoe, Middlesex Co., N. Je, where he worked as a wood
chopper and farm laborer, living in a boarding house which catered

to blacks. His neighbors, across the hall, were Mr. and Mrs. John

argument about her unauthorized use of a pot that belonged to him and
