Simpson, a l3-year-old white ex-convict with a record of 3h arrests,
was» wanted for escape from jail and a4 series of robberies, On the
afternoon of Aug. 21, 1937, hewas driving with a girl friend in New-
ton, Mass., when he committed a minor traffic violation, He was
Stopped by a patrol car and when he could not xsproduce a driver's
license of papers for the Stolen automobile, one officer waat to a

with Simpson and thb girl. The girl stepped out of the car and Simp=
son drew a pistol and disarmed Bell who he forced to drive the car,

fellow officer and started in pursuit. He forced the car to a halt
and Simpson shot both Bell and Murphy as he fled from the car, Mur-
phy managed to fire a shot at Simpson and it sruck him in the neck
but he nonetheless escaped and made his way to a Dorchester tenement
where an ex-convict friend lived and holed up there, Both Officers
Bell and Murphy died of their wounds; and all of the friends of Simp-
son who had been identified by his fingerprints in the stolen car
