Moss, alias Moses, a 27-year-old black man, and Thompson, & 22-year=
old white man, both lived in Htowah, Tenng Thompson was married to
the former Eula Elrod who had lived in the lower part of Murray Coe,
Gae, prior to her marriage and was familiar with that part of the
County, frequently visiting her parents. She knew that a rural mer-
chant, Coleman Osborn, frequently carried large sums of money which
he used to cash the checks of timber workers in the area, On the
night of August 3, 1927, Mr. and Mrs, Thompson and Moss drove down to
Murray County and stoppad at Osborn!s storexwhich was closed for the
night. They summoned Mr. Osborn from his home and purchased some
gasoline. They returned late on Friday night, August 5, after having
robbed some black men and fired a shot at them, stopping at AXK&Hs
two houses and attempting to obtain food, and being seen driving in
that direction by a mumber of persons, Mr. Osborn had gone to bed
when they knocked on his door and asked him to sell them % KW EX

seen in the neighborhood and Moss was also taken into custody when
he was identified as the black man who had been with Mr, and Mrs»
THompsone Moss's shoes matched prints that were found at the bne of
the houses where they had stopped earlier and a woman at the other
house positively identified him, The tire tracks on Thompson's car
matched those found at Osborn's store and the other places where they
had stepped and bullets fired from guns found in their possession
matched the shells found as Osborn's store. : All
three were indicted and though they maintained their innocence, they
were convicted on strong circumstantial. evidence in Separate trials
and all were sentenced t6 die. Moss and Thompson were electrocuted
at the Georgia State Prison on August 35 1928, while, after first re-
ceiving a respite, the sentence of Mrs, Thompson was commuted to life
imprisonment, ’
