Wright, a 19-year-old white native of Watsonville, Calif., had ‘worked
briefly as a cook, He first got into trouble when he was arrested on
a minor charge in 1932, and was frequently in the custody of the ju-~
venile authorities thereafter, generally on charges relating to car
theft. He served a brief term in a California institution before be-~-
ing sentenced to a reformatory for car theft on Ava O87. He
escaped on June 25, 1938, and tzeveled the West Coast stealing auto-
mobiles fram dealers, committing armed robberies and passing worthless
checks, He would go to an automobile dealership and pose as the son
of wealthy parents who wished to buy him a new car, When he had made
his selection, he would have a salesman accompany him and drive the
car to a well-to-de section of town, stopping before a prosperous
appearing house, When the salesman left the car to go and speak with
his parents, he would drive off, use the car for a few days and then
abandon ite Around 10 o'clock on the morning of Nove 7, 1938, he went
to the Yakima, Wash,, agency owned by 61-year-old John Dee Moore, Mr,
Moore himself walked with Wright and, after the youth had made his se-
