DIXON, James

Dixon, a 38-year-old black man, lived at Midway, Cabarrus County,
Ne Ce On Sept. 9, 1938, after he and his wife had been married
for only four months, they got into an argument over her infideli-
ties and shex struck him on the head with an alarm clock, Dixon
then struck her in the head with an axe and killed her before he
set fire to their house. Dixon turned himself in to the police
and though he did not testify at his trial himself, his defense
attorneys intimated that he had been provoked by her conduct. Ther
was @ rumor that she was involved with a white man and her father
was questioned about this, but he denied it, Convicted and sen-
tenced to die, Dixon was asphyxiated at the North Carolina State
Prison on May 5, 1939,
