"Oct. 3, 188l-Wash Fletcher, colored, was hanged at Padu=—
cah, Ky., today for the murder of Amanda Jackson in Aug.,
1883. The murdered woman was the mother of Fletcher's
mistress. Hebecameenraged at the daughter and attacked
her, am the mother was killed in defending the daughter
from his assault, One thousand people, mostly colored,
witnessed the execution, Fletcher addressed his crowd in
a loud, firm voice, but in a rambling way, for an hour,
