Rattle Ground, Clark Co,, Wash. On the afternoon of March 8, 1923,
about the time that school was dismissed, he left home for the pur-
pose of going to a store and purchasing some meat. He was seen
following ll-year-old Anna Nosko, on her way home from school, down
a railroad track, When he overtook the little girl, he grabbed her
and when she screamed he struck her with his fist. She screamed
again and he bludgeoned her with his blackjack, fracturing her skull,
after which he took her over a fence and into some woods where he
exinanitiy criminally assaulted her and cut her throat, He then re-
turned to the railroad track to retrieve her umbrella which she had
dropped and was seen by her two younger brothers. When the child
failed to return home that evening, her father formed a search party
and when he went by the house where the Whitfields lived, he noticed
that Eddie was pacing the floor in a nervous manner though he denied
having seen the girl, After the body, Whitfield was arrested and
a search of the premises uncoverdd the clothes which he had worn
that day, the grousers and underwear being stained with blood which
