"Goldsboro, N+ C,-7-9-1880-The execution of Alex Howard,
negro, for the murder of an old white man, Bob Autry, in
Sampson Coe, took place here today at 2 peme and was wit-
nessed by about 2 ,000 people, All passed off in good or-
der. Howard protested his innocence to the last and made
a very long harangue from the scaffold, but the crime was
fulled proved against him by his own stepson who was an
accomplice to the deed,"
