SINGH, Maher

Sing, 2 30-year-old native of India, was employed as a laborer along
with a number of other Indians on Jersey Island, Contra Costa Co.,
Calif, On the night of August 30, 1919, he entered the cabin occu-
pied by Bran Singh and Lachman Singh. The latter heard same him
forcing entrance and escaped through a rear window, He made his
way to another camp, solicited help and returned. The men found
Bran Singh and two other Indians, Bhetan Singh and Iber Singh, all
literally hacked to pieces, Maher Singh disappeared and was not
captured until April 3, 1920, when he was arrested as he attempted
to board the liner KOREA MARU in San Francisco for return to India,
He confessed, was tried, convicted and sentenced to die. He was
hanged at San Quentin Prison on Dec. 17, 1920.
