Ashley Cocke and Tom Lauderdale hanged at Greenville,
Miss., on July 22, 1902, They had mrdered G. M. Wray,
an engineer on a wanes and Mississippi Valley Railroad
train on Dec, 30, 1901 between the towns of Leband and
Elizabeth, They and Will Blackburn and G, M, Phipps
boarded a northbound train for the purpose of returning
to their homes at Shelby, Wray, a passenger on the car
they entered, was sleeping on a seat. Phipps fell against
him and Wray, awakened, asked what it meant. Cocke told
him it meant he must leave the coach and as tray walked
out, Cocke, Lauderdale and Blackburn drew pistols and
