1=11=1870-Alexander Gardiner, colored, aged 35, was
hung at New Kent Court House this morning for the mrde
and rape of Mrs. Stewart and the murder of John Bakery
her colored farm manager, The prisoner, the night be-
fore his execution, confessed that with John (Lewis)
Kennedy, who made his escape, he agreed to murder Ba-
2 ker, They found Baker in the field and Kennedy shot
: s him. They then went to Mrs, Stewart's house and Gar=
~ diner heard her crying, and a few minutes after, Kenne-
NG came out, saying he had ravished and murdered her.
“They fired the house and burnt her body, and threw Ba~
~ ker's body in the river. On the scaffold this morning,

I am going to heaven or hell." A crow of colored

women around the gallows assailed him with cries of:
"You are going to hell, that's where you are going,"
