John Hill, a well-known white farmer, was hanged at
Covington, Tenn., on Oct. 10, 1905. He had murdered
his wife, Kate Hill, in July, 1903. He had repeatedly
threatened her life because she had institutéd divorce
proceedings against him, On the night of 7-16-1903,
while she was attending to twin babies, she was shot
through window, death ensuing immediately. Hill sus-
pected at once and placed under arrest. Convicted on
circumstantial but conclusive evidence. Supreme Court
reversed first conviction and he was tried and sen=
tenced to die again."
