"Caldwell, Texas, 1-9-189l-Jace Murphy, colored, the’ wife
mirderer, was hung today inside of the jail building,
Murphy was convicted at the spring term, 1890, of murder
and sentenced to be hung in June last. All preparations
were made for the execution at that time and when about
to be taken from the jail to the place of execution, a
telegram was received from the governor ordering a respite
until his sanity could be determined in accordance with
law, his insanity having been suggested by some of the
citizens. At the last term of court these questions
were tried before a jury and they pronounced him sane, and
hewas again sentenced to be hung, He hunt about twenty~
two minutes before being pronounced dead. There were but
a few persons in the jail who witnessed the hanging,
Quite a number were outside hoping to hear something drop,
