GORDON, Walter and INGRAM, Beauty s/i A, i ib ie

Gordon, a Greene Co., Ala., black man, and his 1§=year-old brother-
in-law, Ingram, entered a store in Clinton, Ala., on the night of
March ly 1900. The clerk, Thomas Burton, was in the store alone
at the time and, after hitting him over the head, they cut his
throat and dragged high out from bhhind the Sanneay to bleed to
death before robbing the store, Burton's body was discovered the
next day and BYSSXEXXSK suspicion fastened on Gordon and Ingram
and they were taken into custody within 8 hours. Both confessed
and, as court was in session at the time, they were granted a
Sppedy trial, convicted and sentenced to death, They were hanged
in Hutaw before a large crowd on Mayl8, 1900, Neither made any
remarks from the gallows,
