Drake, 2a 30-year-old Louisville, Ky., black man, was arre: sted
James Edward Simpson, a black Louisville merchant policeman on
April Ji, 19355 and charged with stealing three cans of soup and
a bar of soap from a grocery store. Drake resisted Simpson and
took his pistol away from him. “hen Simpson attempted to obtain
another pistol from a minister who had accompanied him to arrest
Drake, the prisoner shot and killed him, Convicted and sentenced
to die, Drake was electrocuted at the Western Kentucky State Peni-
tentiary on May 15, 1936, He made a speech inside the death cham-
oad in which he admitted killing frake but claimed self-defense, -

its goodbye." When none of the witnesses spoke, he laughed and
said: "Ain't nobody going to speak? Come on, be lively." Several
witnesses then call8d goodbye to him and the switch was thrown,
