"Goodwife (Goody) Bassett, of Stratford, Conn,, undoubt edl
hanged some time in 1651, (William F, Poole, in his |
chapter entitled "Witcheraft in Boston", in Justin
Winson MEMORIAL HISTORY OF BOSTON, Boston, 1881, II, page
137). When condemned she said another witch lived at
Fairfield and she named Goodwife Knapp; later she meant
Goodwife Stapkes, The Gourt trial for Goodwife Bassett
was held in May, 1651, In HISTORICAL SKETCHES, the au-
thors, B, W. Hinks and B, L, Swan (1871) state that the
place of execution is pointed out to visitors; that the
name of the stream that passes it is Fellows Brook and
nearby is Gallows Swamp. (See also Orcutt, HISTORY OF
SPRATFORD, Vol. I, page 17.)
