Corey, an 80-year-old resident of Malem, Mass., at the time of the
infamous witchcraft trials, was none to well Tiked by his contempo-
raries who considered him a stubborn and intractivle man, It was

“a man who worked for him named Goodell and that he beat and stomped ~
Goodell to death, His wife, Martha, had been hanged for witchcraft _
on August 19, 1692, and it was the testimony of Giles Corey and his
~ four sons=in-law that phayed a major part in her conviction and exe=—
__cution, though Corey recanted later, Subsequently, he also was
accused of witchcraft and stubbornly refused to plead either inno-
cent or guilty. As a result, for "standing mite," Corey was sen=
"oressed to death", This meant being laid out naked on a stone
floor and having weights placed on the body until the pressuxe
_killed the victim and it is the only instance in history of this
means of execution being carried out in the United States, Giles
