tenced to be hanged on 9-2-1909 for the rape of Miss
Maggie McDermoot of 36) Simpson St. Xeceived sentence
with composure saying nothing other than he was innocent,
Miss McDermoot said on stand she met Merritt At Davis &
. Thrumond Sts. late in afternoon of 6-28-1909 on her re-
turn home from a market, He threw a handkerchief around
her neck, choked and bound her and dragged her down an
embankment where he kept her half an hour, He was caught
next day by her brother and C, L, Barrett and lodged in
Fulton Tower where the girl identified him, Atty R. R.
Shropshire said he would appeal. No mention in JOURNAL
of 9-2-1909
