life in jails seattered throughout the country, his records compris-~
ing over 300 offenses, the first of which was committed while he was
a child. On July 20, 1919, he was in Ogden, Utah, driving an automo-
bile that he had stolen from a ranch in Wyoming. He answered an ad
inserted in the Ogden newspaper by a L7-vyear-old high school student
who sought to earn money as a baby sitter, Shirley Gretzinger. When
he picked Miss Gretzinger up, instead of taking her to the proposed
job; he drove her to a gulch outside of Ogden and when she resisted
his sexual advances, he killed her by forcing wads of tissue paper
down her throat and binding them in with strips torn:from her cloth-~

Butte, Mont., and answered an advertisement in the paper there that
had been placed by Sue Horn who was seeking a position m& as a cook
on a ranch, He picked Miss Horn up and drove her outside of Butte

either case until August 1]; when he became involved in a hit-and-run
