Carr, a white gambler, operated a gambling concession in Sonora,
Calif., before going to Carson City, Nevada, in the silver rush of
1860. Suspected of cheating in his Carson City game, he travaled

by stage to Thousand Wells Station (now Wells) where he opened anothe
