McCAFFARY, John

McCaffary, a native of Ireland, and his wife Bridget lived in Keno-
sha County, recently separated from Racine County, Wisconsin, On —
the night of July 23, 1850, neighbors were awakened by Bridget's
screams begging her husband to "spare" her and to "save" her. The
cries were so alarming that the neighbors rushed ASXEXS6SE over to
the McCaffary's, They had heard the splashing of water, and they
want to a hogshead which was sunk in the backyard and filled with
water to a depth of 20 inches, McUlaffary was emerging from it when
they arrived and when they asked if his wife was in there, he replied
that someone wasx in the well but that nothing but a shirt was in the
hogshead. A neighbor looked and found Bridget's body pressed down
under the water. McCaffary was immediately arrested and charged with
having murdered his wife by drowning. Because the Kenosha County
jail tad not been completed, he was held in Racine until time for

his trial when he was returned to his mmkk own county. His request

for a change of venue on the grounds that his neighbors, natives of
anothersection of Ireland, did not like Him was denied and he was
