"On Friday, June 1), 1822, John Sampson, convicted at
last Superior Court for murder of Burwell Rouse was exe~
cuted at Hay-Mount pursuant to his sentence, He walked
unaided from the jail to the place of execution, his
whole demeanor evinging a degree of composure and resignat
ion attainable only by a full reliance on the ample pro-
mises of the Gospel, At the fatal spot he spent some
time in earnest devotion, assistéd by the accompanying
clergymen, and, having ascended the ca rt, after the
usual preparations, it was quickly drawn from under him,"
