lived in San Antonio, Texas, On August ?, 1879, he was convicted in
Federal Court of mail robbery and served a prison sentence, He and his
wife were friends with another black couple, Mr. and Mrs, Anderson
Harris, and when Mr, Harris, a former policeman, became ill Mr, and
Mrs, Brown assisted Mrs, Harris in.caring for him, During this time,
Brown and Mrs, Harris began having an affair which continued after
Harris recuperated and obtained a job driving a hack, On the night of
February 7, 1894, Brown gave $2.50 to a Mexican friend, Alois Vidal,
and instructed him to hire Harris' hack and go to a point three miles
southm£€ of San Antonio where Brown assured him he would be waiting fmx
with two women, When the hack approached, Brown shot and killed Harris
who was driving. Both Brown and Vidal were arrested and indicted for
the murder with each claiming that the other had fired the shot that
had killed Harris, Vidal convinced the jury hearing his case that he
had not known of Brown's intentions of murdering Harris and he was
acouitted but Brown, after first entering a plea of not guilty, changed
his plea to guilty and was sentenced to be hanged, The conviction was
affirmed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and on the morning St
