DEAN, Cyrus By.
Dean was a member of a gang which used the cutter Black Snake Ho
smuggle potash into Canada in violation of the Embargo Act passe
by Congre ss on Dec, 22, 1807. The Black Snake would travel on as
Onion River in Vermont ae Lake Champlain and then into Canada, On
Aug, 1, 1.608, a Lt, Farrington and 13 others received orders to take
the BRAK Saake and arrest its crew. They rowed the cutter Fly up

The crew risisted arrest and Dean fired a blundarbuss that fatally
woulded Captain Jonathan Ormsbee and Pvt, Asa Marsh. A possee was
formed that rapidly rounded up the crew. Dean received the death
penalty because he had been the one to fire a blunderbuss while his
companions received prison terms, On Nov, 11, 1808, Dean was escort-
ed to the Court House in Burlington where he listed to his funeral
oration. Then a crowd of 10,000 persons Brom all over Veimont mar-
ched behind him as he was taken to the gallows which had been
