"Mrs. Musgrove, wife of Christopher Musgrove, residing

nearShallow Ford on Staunton River about 20 miles south
of Liberty (Bedford Co,, Va.) y was most inhumanely mure
dered on 7-17-1858, The Lynchburg VIRVINIAN of the 20th
says that a negro woman, her servant, was wasing at the
“spring, a short distance from house, Mrs, M, went there
for the purpose of giving the servant more orders for her
work, In a short time, Mrs. M.'s daughter herard them
engaged in quarreling and when the mother did not return
went in search, At spring found mother in the branch a
short distanceoff with head curshed but no other marks of
violence on person, The negro had disappeared but she
was found at house of neighbor a mile or two away. At
time of arrest, seemed. confused and had blood on, clothing,

was not her intention to do so; that in striking with the
stick, she had no other intention than to prevent her mis=

given; that she was sorry she had permitted her temper to
bring her to such an end; that she justly deserved her
