for his drinking, he followed her into the woods surrounding the

lake and strangled her into unconsciousness before pludgeoning her

to death with a large rock, His attack was so furious that he com=
pletely obliterated her facial features with the robk and he then
ripped the clothes from her body to make it appear that the crime

had been committed by a sexual criminal, Gaines, who had always
