"The State of Georgia yesterday took the life of Will Mims
M con negro, in expiation of the murder in 1938 of Dave

F, Mitchell, elderly white WPA worker. Mimes went to the
electric €hair shortly after noon without making a state-
ment. A last-minute appeal to Gov. Rivers the d&y before
had failed to stay the execution and an appeal for a new
trial also had failed. Mitchell died in a Telfair Street
gutter of a knife wound in the throat inflicted by Mims
after the white man had sought to intercede in an argument
between the negro and his common-law wife. Mims declared

in a statement to the jury that convicted him that he was

under a 'spell' placed on him by a negress when he killed
