"Another shocking crime committed in 1890 was the ‘murder
of Police Officer McCormick by Harry Singleton, a negro,
The officer had arrested the Negro on some petty charge
and was standing at a telephone calling for the wagon to
take him to the station when Singleton snatched the offi-
cer's gun and shot him, Singleton eluded arrest for
several days, but the sheriff got a tip that he was hiding
in a house across thes treet fromthe jail, Searching the
house, suspicion centered on a large trunk, It wastaken
to the jail and opened and the suspicion was confirmed -
Singleton was in the trunk, and he had a gun but did not
dare to use it, He was speedily convicted and was han
