and his father, along with other relatives, lived with a wman named
Paupau who was his father's mistress, Kapea, who helped with the
farm chores, was in love with and betrothed to Paupau's 12-year-old
duaghter, Pua, In September, 1897, Dr. Jared K, Smith, a local repre-
sentative of the Board of Health, instructed Paupau and Pua to report
for examinations for leprosy as he had detected some symptoms. the
jawaiians knew that if they should be found infected with the disease
they would be sent to the Leper Settlement on Molokai and they were
incensed, Kapea, taking his father, Kaio, and others into the family
into his confidence, determined to kill Dr, Smith, On several differ-
ent nights, he and two younger cousins waited on the road that Smith
traveled to his home, planning to waylay and kill him, but the Doctor
was not out on those nights, On one occasion, they set fire to a cane
field owned by the Doctor in the hope that he would be drawn there by
the flames, but his employges managed to quench the fire without his
having to leave the house, On thenight of Sept. 2h, 1897, they rode

to Dre Smith's house around 10 o'clock, When they saw the light on
