at the Tennessee State Prison, (The paper says the case was appealed
to the U.S, Supreme Court, but I cannot find any record of an

appeal, )

BARR, Charles ("The Black Panther")

Barr, a 23-year-old black man who was the son of a clergyman, was
the houseboy for Memphis, Tenn,., political boss, Edward N. Crump.
On the night of January 27, 1923, he borrowed an automobile from a
friend and drove out Summer Ave, in Memphis. At a lonely spot in
the road, he saw an automobile parked in which sat Duncan Waller,
a Mayfield, Kye, businessman, and Mrs, Ruth McElwaine Tucker, a di-
vorcee. Barr parked about 100 yards from their automobile and
approached ib on foot. When he reached the automobile, he opened
fire, killing Wallter instantly. Mrs. Tucker leaped from the car
and ran up an embankment, but he overtook her, zapped her and then
shot her, taking some jewelry and other valuables before returning
to the car and robbing Waller's body. Four months later, on the
night of May 23, he borrowed the same car and again proceeded out
Summer Avenue until he found a parked car in which W, Obe Spencer
was parked with his date, Miss Laura Wheaton Johnsony Again he
stealthily approached the car and when Miss Johnson saw him she

screamed. He immediately shot and killed Spencer and when Miss John-
son continued screaming, he shot her also, He then kidnapped her

and drove away after taking her jewelry and Spencer's money, She
