Winston, a black man, was born in Crockett, Tamn., on May 2, 1855.
He left home at an early age and went to New Orleans where he was
employed for a time as,a sailor and roustabout. He then went to
Georgia where he was HERS married for a period. of six months and
arrested on ohe occasion for @arrying a concealed weapon. He then
moved to Paducah, Kentucky, where he worked as a laborer and became
the lover of a notorious black prostitute, Vinnie Stubblefield who
lived in Dunnot's Alley. His violent temper earned him his nickname
of "Devil" and he was generally considered:a terror in the black
community of Paducah, On the night of-April 22,:1897, he went to
Miss Stubblefield's home and when he found that she was not at home,
he lay down on her bed and went to K&XEE Sleep. Shortly after mid-
night she returned with another woman and two men, She struck a
match and this woke Winston who immediately demanded a cigarette,
She said that she did not have any and they got into an argument in
the course of which he leaped from the bed and stabbed her, He then
threw her onto the bed, and in the presence of her friends, literally
Slashed her to ribbons, After he had finished, he grabbed his valise
and left. Winston was arrested in Fulton the following Sunday and-
