Hallinger, a black man who claimed to have been born in Ireland on
March 17, 1857, had a varied background in which he had worked as a
sailor, plasterer and bricklayer before beoming a Baptist minister,
While preaching in Connecticut, he established a common-law relation-
ship with Mary Peterson and when she accepted employment in New York,|
he left the ministry and followed her there, A #& tremendous man
