Miller, a 28-year-old white Akron, Ohio, taxidriver whose
father had committed. suicide when he was two years old
served as Sefretary of the Akron Cab Drivers' Union. He
began Wik criminal career when he fled to California with
his Union's funds. As he returned to Ohio, he staged
several holdups across the country. Along his way, he
picked up two women companions and when they reached
Canton, Ohio, they checked into a rooming house, Neigh-~
bors complained of the noise that the threesome was making
and summoned the police. Detectives Albert Bush and Steve
Skotnicky arrived at the boarding house on April 17, 193h,

and Miller engaged in a gun battle in which he shot and
