| BROWN, Sylvester
Brown, an illiterate 27-year-old black native of South Carolina, had
lived for a number.of years in Youngstown, Ohio, where he was employed
as a steel worker. On the night of May 2, 1921, he and a friend had
planned to rob a store on Belmont Ave. but when they arrived, the
store had already closed. The two men were walking away when they
were approached by Youngstown patrolman Alexander H, Warren, Without
warning, Brown drew a pistol and shot and killed Warren hefore the
policeman even had an opportunity to question them, Has companion
was taken into custody eleven days later and admitted that he had
been there on the night that Warren was killed, but he named Brown
as the actual slayer and said that he did not even know that Brown
was going to shoot until after he had done so. Brown was turned in
by a woman shortly afterwards and he confessed stating that he had
fired the fatal shot and clearing his companion of any prior knowledge
of his intention to kill the policeman, He pleaded guilty and through-
out his trial before the judge who heard the evidence and set the
punishment he begged for mercy. An alienist testified that Brown had
bhe mentality of a small child but added that he knew the difference
