Weldon, a 55-year-old Florence Co., S. C.m black man was a tenant on
the plantation owned by WSLRKEXEXXK a prominent and wealthy white-
man, “lihu Moye. One night in 1910, Weldon and William Burriss en-
tered Moye's house while another black many Clarence Ham, stood watch
outside. They shot and killed Moye before robbing the residence.
All three were convicted and sentenced to die and Ham confessed his
part in the crime prior to his execution in Florence %o., in November
1910. Weldon and Burriss both appealed their cases and Burriss died
WEZXS in prison while awaiting the outcome of the appeals, Weldon
was electrocuted on Aug. 13, 1912, “fter the death mask had been
placed over his face, he stated that he wanted xm to talk and the
covering was removed. He made a lengthy statement,during the course
of which he broke down several times, in which he repeatedly asserted
his innocence and sta ted that he knew nothing of the crime.
