Johnson, a 3l-year=old black man, and his friend Smalls, also black,
had committed a number of burglaries in and around Moorestown, Bur
lington County, N. J. On January 18, 1906, they went to the farm
home of Miss S, Florence Allinson, a 35-year-old white woman, and
hid in the barn. Around noon, when Miss Allinson entered to feed
her cows, they overpowered, raped and then killed her by strangling
her with a rope and leather strap and bludgeoning her with a club
and a milk stool. A five-year-old girl, the ward of Miss Allinson,
saw them leave the barn and enter the house where they stole a number
of items subsequently found in their possession, After they had left,
she called an oil dealer ho was passing and he went into the barn
where he discovered the body, Johnson went to Baltimore, Md,, where
he was subsequently arrested, having become a suspect when several.
persons said that they had seen him in the vicinity of the Allinson
house on the morning of the crime, He was tried, convicted and sen-
tenced to hang, Smalls was arrested after Johnson's trial in connec-
tion with some other burglaries that they had committed together and
then made a confession in wnich he said that he and not Johnson
