Sancedo, a MexicaneAmerican, was born in San Antonio, Tex., on May 7,
1875, and lived there all of his life. A talented musician, he had,
at one time, played with Doebbler's Band and, after working with the
city as a driver of a garbage truck, he begame a rug peddler, He and
his wife lived on Hickman Street near San Pedro Springs, San Antonio,
with her 10-year-old daughter, Gunecenga Morales, Around 5:30 on the
afternoon of April 29, 1901, Sancedo, an epileptic who had been drink-
ing, raped ZMEX his stepdaughter and fled from the house, Some work-
men who saw him passing attempted to stop him and he slashed one of
them with a knife, inflicting a painful but not fatal wound, He made
his way to the home of his’ aunt about three miles distant and was
taken into custody there around midnight, At his trial, his défense
was one of insanity and a special jury ruled him sane before the trial
proceeded, He maintained that he had only a vague remembrance of the
assault and the child testified against him. His conviction was
appealed on the grounds that she was an incompetent witness, not un-
derstanding the meaning of an oath, but the conviction was affirmed
by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, After he had received one
brief respite, he was hanged in ane jail at San Antonio on Septe 19,
