and that afternoon he was arrested inside a bowling alley at Rose-
burg, Ore, Mrs. Mclarland'ts car was found outside and the bloody
hunting knife that he had used was concealed on it. Farley claimed
to have blacked out and remembered nothing about having killed her
and psychiatrists in their testimony before the Court supported
this, but the fact that he had taken the knife with him when he
went to see her was shown as proof of premeditation and he was con-
victed and sentenced to hang. He always maintained that he remen-

McFarland, a divorcee with one child who worked as a checker at

mane The two began going steady ERAXK in 1953 and subsequently be-
came engaged, In Spite of her obvious affection for Farley ‘and his
for her, she Continued seeing other men which caused a certain
amount of jealousy and resentment on his part, They had a date to
meet at a tavern on Feb, 20, 1954, but she did not show up. The
next day, he drank a few beers at the home that he shared with his
mother and then went to her apartment where they had a violent
Quarrel but made up and had dinner, Mrs, McFarland agx and her
room mate decided to attend a dance at the McChord Air Force Base
NCO Club but she agreed to take Farley home first, She did not
return and the next day her body was found floating in a pond in

bludgeoned, evidently with some large rocks, and her face and body
