GARRETT, Dick
Garrett, a black resident of Center, Shelby Co,, Texas, was arrested
several times in 1906 for minor offenses and was freed each time,
He worked at various odd jobs for Judge and Mrs, Short and when he
got into trouble, he ‘would invariably turn to them. On Nov, 17, 1906,
he was being chased by the Sheriff for some minor breach of the law
and he went to Judge Shortts office. The judge told him to go to
his house and Mrs, HSE Short would hide him while the judge
attempted to settle the matter, Grerett fled there and Mrs, Short
hid him under a bed, Several citizens served as an intermediaty in
an attempt to persuade Garrett to Surrender and when one of these,
Dre Mike Paul, entered the house, the frightened Garrett shot and
killed him. Garrett was promptly arrested and a mob gathered which
was determined to lynch him, The District Court was mesting at the
time and it was determined to hold the trial promptly to give the
execution a semblance of legality, The Governor sent National Guard
troops from Timpson and Beaumont to maintain order and the trial was
held on Nov. 21. While it was in progress, the gallows was being
