LePAGE, Joseph

LePage, alias Joseph Paquette, was a French-Canadian woodcutter who
lived and worked in Pembroke, N. H. On the. morning of Oct. 1, 1875,
instead of going directly to his work, he went to the road where
l7-year-old Josie Langmaid, daughter of a presperous farmer and
County Cormissioner, would pass on her way to school at the Pembroke
Acadamy. As Miss Langmaid passed, he knockdd her unconscious with a
club, dragged her into the woods, decapitated her with a BA razor
and then raped the corpse. When the girl failed to return from
School, search parties were found and LePage, as an experienced
woodsman, was active in the quest for the girl. Her body was found
that night and the head was located the next day, wrapped in the blue
cape that she had worn to school, IJlePage became a suspect when it
was found that his hob-nailed boots matched some marks found on the
bedy and a search of his residence uncovered the razor that he had
used. The Chief of Police of St. Albans, Wermont, came forward with
eo information that he had been the chief suspect in the rape-murder
