LITTLE, Howard , a ae
Little, a 38-year-old white man, had served as U, S. Marshal for the
Eastern District of Kentucky for several years until he killed a man
named George Kinney and was sentenced to imprisonment for life, After
a few years, he was pardoned and moved to Hurley, Buchanan Co., Va.,;
where he was employed as foreman and purchasing agent for a large lum~
ber company. Early in September, 1909, he purchased a stand of tim~
ber from Mrs, Elizabeth (Aunt Betsy) Justus, an aged widow who lived
with her son-in-law, George Meadows, Mrs, Meadows and their three voun
children, Mrs. Justus received over $1,600 in @ash for the timber and
Little, who had paid the money to her, knew that she distrusted banks
and would likely hide it some place in her log cabin, On the night of
September 21, he returned, ostensibly for a vistt andy purposely stay-
