BROWNLEE, Albert

Brownlee, a 27-year-old white native of Oregon, had aida Naas the

arrival at the prison but was subsequently recaptured and served
until May 15, 1926, when he was released on parole. After his re-
lease from prison, Brownlee obtained jobs as.a ranch hand and as a
lumberman, but lost both of them when his employer's discovered his
prison record, He then obtained a job as a fireman at Carpenter's
Mill in Lane County. On the night of Feb, 27, 1927 3 he and a com-
penion entered the Venbta pool room-restaurant owned by William
Middaugh. While his companion held the customers at bay with a pis-
tol, Brownlee shot and seriously wounded Middaugh who he mistakenly
thought was resisting their attempt at robbery. The pair stole $90
