"Chatham, Pittsylvania Co. 5 Vas » 3/31/1882; Dock aright,
colored, was hung here at 11:06 o'clock this morning for
the murder of Coleman Abthur, white, on Feb. 5, 1881.

He walked to the gallows situated about 150 yards from
the jaile The Danville Grays acted as a guard. The only
words spoken by him after he left the Yail were when a re-
porter asked him if he killed Arthur. He replied: "I did

not. His neck was broken by the fall. ‘The hanging was
private.*
