Johnson and another black, Henry Walker, were arrested at
Sharon Springs early in afternoon of July 16, 1930, and
taken to Schoharie where they were sentenced to 15 days
each in the county jail for operating automobile without
license, When they were takn to the Sheriff's office,
Steadman frisked Walker first and found no weapon, John-
son then told him: ""If you Lay hands on me, I'11 kill
you." When the Sheriff started twoards him, Johnson drew
a pistol and fired, the bullet passing through Steadman's
liver and inflicting wound which subsequently killed hig.
