"During the Civil War both Confederate and state authori-
ties in La. were plagued by groups of jayhawkers - bands
of Unionists, draft dodgers, and Confederate army desert-
ers = who fought to retard the Southern war effort, Con-
federate troops eften went into one of the jayhawker
strongholds in the Catahoula swamp area to, clear the re~
gion of the marauders, and the following account describe
the subsequent execution of Pvt. George W. Conly as a jay
hawker: "Tuesday, June Te 186hee.Ordered by Col, Levy, A

ed as a jayhawker, Had him shot at 12 M (?) at Pineville,
He died very bravely, Was cool and collected.
His death was almost instantaneous, All 6 balls of the

guns loaded passing through his body, 2 through the heart
